What’s Your Why?
Why do you do what you? Is it because other people expect you to? Or you feel an obligation? Is it just a financial means to an end? Are you passionate about what you do? Do you feel connected to other people, or to God when you do it? Do you have an answer for “why?”?
When I’m asked- “Why wedding planning?” – Here’s my answer.
I’m good at other things. I have the ability to do a pretty wide variety of tasks and jobs. But, about a year and a half ago, my heart started hurting and my head started spinning because, frankly, I didn’t feel like what I was doing day in and day out mattered much. Though I appreciated my day job and the people I had the opportunity to work with, it just wasn’t satisfying me the way that it once had.
So I did some soul searching.
I started praying consistently, “God, what am I good at?” and, “What abilities and traits have you given me that are unique to me?” and last but not least, “What do I actually ENJOY doing??”. It took me a hot minute. And eventually I landed on wedding planning and coordinating.
Once I started forming relationships with other vendors, I recognized that these are my people. ~For the most part~ Wedding Industry vendors are happy, bubbly, willing and able to serve others, and do so excitedly! They get to be creative and encouraging and task-oriented all at the same time. As a small business owner, they have the opportunity to create their own scheduled (enter the Hallelujahs) and to decide what goals and aspirations that they have for their own business AND home life. I’d be lying if I said that the flexibility wasn’t extremely enticing to me. And I LOL at my old self all the time when I remember stating so confidently that I was “for sure a 9-5er”. *facepalm* Things change, what can I say?
Sometimes when I tell people about wedding planning, it seems frivolous. Alright, total honesty? It even seems a little silly.
But then, I remember that I get the opportunity to be a part of one of the absolute biggest, most meaningful, and happiest days of a person’s life! And who WOULDN’T want that opportunity?!
I get to stand by someone’s side and encourage them for months at a time. I get to know people; good, wonderful people, as they enter into this stage of life that is just so beautiful. In the process, I get to use my knowledge and expertise to guide those wonderful people and help them execute the vision that they have in their head of what their dream wedding would be like. I get to bear witness to a commitment so big, that God ordained it as sacred. I GET to be a wedding planner and help my awesome clients with their wedding planning, because I was gifted the ability and opportunity to do so.
And who knows if I’ll do this for the rest of my life, or just for a season. But in any case, my why is because I felt called to. I took a good, hard look at who I am, and what makes me different, I saw a need, and I acted. I hope that you can do the same with yourself and what you “do”!
