The wedding tradition of “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” is a timeless part of wedding customs. Each item represents a good luck charm for the bride as she embarks on her new journey!
Coming up with creative ideas for this can get overwhelming, especially when you are in the nitty gritty with all of the other wedding planning details. That’s why I’ve done the work for you!
Here are some creative and meaningful ideas for each of the four categories to help make your wedding day extra special.
Vintage Jewelry
I love this one! Wearing a piece of jewelry from a family member is not only a beautiful way to honor your family’s history, but it also adds a special and personal touch to your bridal look. Imagine walking down the aisle wearing a piece of jewelry that has been in your family for generations. It’s a small detail, but it can make a huge impact and create a beautiful sentimental connection on your wedding day.
Heirloom Veil
Wearing the same veil that your mother or grandmother wore on their wedding day can add a unique and timeless element to your wedding day look. It’s also so meaningful, and I’m sure it would mean the world to your mother or grandmother too. If you’re worried about it looking a little older and dingy compared to your dress, you can have it deep cleaned so that it sparkles white like new! 🤍
Vintage Wedding Gown
Wearing a vintage wedding dress that has been passed down from a family member is such a beautiful way to carry on tradition in your family. I’ve also seen brides take pieces of lace or aspects of their mother’s dress and incorporated them into a new dress! This is a great way to take that tradition but make it your own.
Personalized Wedding Dress Hanger
Personalized wedding dress hanger with your new last name on it are SO cute! It’s a small detail, but it is such a fun way to add personalized touch to your wedding day photos!
Customized Wedding Shoes
Customizing your wedding shoes with your wedding date, your initials, or a special message is such a fun way to add a unique and personal touch to your bridal look.
New Perfume
Rather than wearing your favorite fragrance, buy a scent you’ve never worn before for your wedding. Not only will you have fun choosing your new wedding perfume, you’ll also be reminded of the big day every time you spritz it on in years to come!
Borrowed Jewelry
I know that this certainly sounds like one of the most traditional options to check off that something-borrowed box, but there are ways to make it feel a bit more modern. Don’t just go with any old piece of jewelry. I love the idea of asking Mom or Grandma for something they either wore on their own wedding day or something that your parents or grandparents were given as a gift from their other half. Wearing pieces like this can hold so much meaning. 💗
The First Dance Song
Cue the tears of joy! Select the first dance song that your parents danced to as your own and surprise them with it. This is such a unique “something borrowed” that is for sure going to make an impact.
Hair Accessories
Borrow from your besties. Think headpieces, hair clips, and yes, even tiaras. If you have bridesmaids that are married, you could borrow their hair accessories! I know someone who borrowed a hair clip from their future sister-in-law, and it was so special.
Blue Wedding Garter
Wear a blue wedding garter underneath your wedding dress. It’s a fun and subtle way to incorporate the “something blue” tradition!
Blue Pedicure
Get a blue pedicure for your wedding day. It can be a beautiful and unexpected way to represent the “something blue” tradition.
Blue Wedding Shoes
Wear blue wedding shoes to represent the “something blue” tradition. It’s a fun and bold way to add a pop of color to your bridal look.
There are so many ways you can get creative with the wedding tradition “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” – but don’t overthink it! These are small details in the grand scheme of things.
