Finding the perfect wedding photographer is arguably one of the most important decisions to make when it comes to planning your wedding. You have to find someone you absolutely trust and get along with. You will be with them for most of your wedding day, so it’s important that you actually vibe with them and enjoy their company.

There are so many different styles of wedding photography and you want to make sure that the photographer you choose fits your personality and overall style. You can go for the more mysterious and broody type or the brighter, happy go lucky style!

Find your personal style

So that brings us to our first step, figuring out what your personal style is. A great way to do this is scrolling through Instagram and saving photos you love, starting Pinterest boards, and then going back through everything you have saved to find common trends! Keep in mind, “style” refers to the editing style (i.e. the light, vibrancy of colors, contrast, etc.). Once you find a couple photos you love, click over to that specific photographer’s website and look at one of their galleries! If you like what you see, you’ve found the “photography style” that fits you best. Most of the time, photographers will have a brief description of their style on their website as well. So once you decide you love their gallery, if you need some words to help describe what that style is, surf their website and you’re bound to find a description there.

Set your budget 

Setting a budget is also vital. Wedding photography is expensive and although it’s worth every penny, you want to make sure you aren’t breaking the bank or speaking with potential vendors that are wayyyy over budget. Setting a budget also helps narrow down the sea of wedding photographers out there!

Ask your venue

You also might want to ask your venue for a list of preferred vendors! It’s always helpful having a wedding photographer that has experience working at your venue. They will know all the best photo spots, where the best lighting is, and you will be able to look at their portfolio and see photo examples in your actual venue! If you’re a visual person like me, this is SO helpful! 

Check those reviews

I totally recommend you checking social media and online reviews too! That is the best way to ensure a wedding photographer is trustworthy. 

Do your due diligence

Nothing is wrong with interviewing multiple potential vendors, too! Sometimes having a quick call or grabbing coffee with someone is the best way to find out if you vibe with the person. 

Here are some good questions to ask when interviewing a photographer: 

• How many weddings have you photographed? 
• Do you have a full wedding gallery I can look at? 
• What is the turnaround time for receiving a full gallery? 
• Do you make edits to some photos when necessary?
• Do you have a suggested day-of timeline? 
• Do you have a second photographer who works with you on the day of? 
• Do you include an engagement session with the wedding booking? 
• How many hours are included, and how many do you recommend? (Note: I typically recommend 8-10 hours!) 

Have a test run

See if you can book your photographer for a mini session or an engagement session as a test run for your big day! If you haven’t booked them yet for your wedding, this is a great time to make sure that you flow well together. When you get the photos back you will also see if you like their editing and overall style.
